Lagos Goodfellows and Kano Aitek for Semi finals.

Lagos Goodfellows beat Petrosmith 5-3 and Kano Aitek also defeated Ibadan Oluyole 6-5 as both winnings teams booked their places in the semifinal of the Low Cup as the 2014 Lagos Polo International Tournament drifts to its climax this weekend.

Another Kano team, Titans also bagged a win in day 8 of the 10-day twin-phased tournament as they beat Lagos HST 6-2½ to enhance their chance of progressing from the stream 2 while Ibadan Eleyele lost 6-5 to Raven Rojo in the eight-team cup.

Titans were defeated 6-5½ by city rivals Susplan in the first match and knowing they needed a win to avoid an exit, they opened score through Ibrahim Audu's was in the first chukka only for but Mohammed Mudeihli hits back for HST who ended the chukka leading 1½-1 due to their handicap inferiority.

Audu scored two quick goals -the second of which was a belly shot- to give Titans a comfortable 4-1 lead to end the chukka. Further goals by Sani Umar and Jamilu Umar in the third chukka puts daylight between the sides.

Audu signed off his man-of-the-match display when he finished off a breakaway move for his side's sixth goal making Ali Safieddine's goal for the Lagos side academic.

Two more trophies are up for grab today as Kano Keffi Ponies and Lagos Ironclad Fifth Chukker vie for the Italian Ambassador's Cup while two of the teams in the semifinal of the Low Cup battle for the Lagos Governor's Cup.

The championship ends tomorrow with the Beginners Cup, Open Cup and Majekodunmi Cup up for grabs.

2014 Lagos Low cup honors fiercely competed for.

The Lagos Polo club which has now become a makeshift due to atmospheric condition resumed action again at the Ribadu ground after a match was played yesterday at Femi Otudeko Farm where the Ironclad/5thChukker beat Kano Titans. The first match of the day between Kano susplan and Kano Aitek kicked-off at exactly 1:pm under a torrid atmospheric condition.
Jemilu Umar drew the first blood of the opening match after he broke away from the center of the field down to the left flank of the opponent goal area to the the goal post. It was an injury infested match as Swedih Abdulahi fell from his horse several times which put the match into several stopish situation for several minutes. The game ended 6-3 1/2 in favour of Kano Susplan.
The Kano Aitek and Kano Susplan both from Kano, battle to pick a ticket to play in the final of the Lagos Low cup.

The second match of the day between Ibadan Oluyole and Lagos HST ended 7-1 in favour of the Lagos HST. It was a disappointing outing for the Ibadan team as they bow down to the supremacy of the Lagos HST team.

Ibadan Eleyele tried to redeem the image of the Ibadan teams as they fought fiercely against the will power of the Lagos petroSmith in the third match of the day.
The Ibadan team dominated the first two chukkas. Some of the spectators interviewed by our correspondence were optimistic that the Ibadan team would win due to their dominance but it was so much for the optimism as Lance Watson took over the game in the third and final chukkas scoring from every angle to put the PetroSmith team forward and eventual 7 - 4 1/2 victory against Ibadan Eleyele.

However, in the fouth match of the Lagos low cup, Lagos Raven Rojo suffered humiliating defeat from the Lagos good fellows 4 1/2-12, while the last match of the day is still on as at the time this story is been compiled.

Lagos Int'l Polo: Kano beat Lagos teams to sweep titles

Kano Ashbert Titans yesterday emerged winners of the Majekodunmi Cup beating Lagos Ironclad Shorelines 12- 11 as the 2013 Lagos Polo International Tournament ends in an exhilarating way at the Lagos Polo Club, Ikoyi .

The win completes a memorable tournament for teams in the northern state with Kano RTC beating Lagos Caverton in the Low Cup final of the event which has MTN and GTBank as major sponsors.

Toto Gerardo Collardin was the star man of the day helping Titans to hold on to their one-goal handicap advantage heading to the sixth and final chukka.

With last year’s winners and finalists Linetrale Delaney and Fifth Chukka fallen by the way side, Shorelines scored the first open goal with Ahmadu Umar connecting Julio Novillo-Estrada’s pass but Toto was on hand to restore his side’s lead to end the first chukka.

A plus-seven handicapper, Toto again broke free from the middle of the field and set himself up with a with a60-yard pass before smashing a shot from the goal mouth to widen their lead 3-1. Albert Esiri was the next player to shine for Titans scoring in succession to give his side a 5-1 lead. Thereafter, Eduado Menendez also scored two quick goals but Toto managed to connect the ball with his mallet after Joaquin Pitaluga’s shot stopped just some few yards in the goal area. There was still more time for Eduado to score twice as the chukka ended 6-5.

Scores at the end of the fourth chukka stood at 9-7 as Toto scored three more while Eduado and Julio also hit target. The handicap goal was the difference between t sides by the end of the fifth chukka with Eduardo and Toto scoring once each to keep the tie close heading to the last chukka of which a solitary goal by Toto clinching the biggest Polo trophy in Nigeria.

Linetrale Delaney clinch Independence Cup

..as HST win Governor's Cup

A dominant second and third chukka performance helped Linetrale Delaney recovered a three-goal deficit to beat Lintex Anadariya 10 - 8 in the Lagos International polo Tournament which ends today. The win ensured that they win the Independence Cup and they are also on course for the Majekodunmi Cup which they are the defending champions.

Anadariya, who also had Usman and Bashir Dantata, had caused the biggest upset by beating Fifth Chukker on Wednesday and they showed their determination to go all the way by leading 4-1 after the opening two chukkas.

Five straight goals –two in the third chukka and another three in the fourth chukka - swung the game in favour of Linetrale who led 6-4 by the close of the fourth chukka. Raul Lapalcette amended for his missed shot to close draw Anadariya close and almost immediately, he broke away to score a brilliant individual goal to level proceedings at 6-6.

Anadariya regained the lead as Lapalcette converted a 40-yard penalty for 7-6 but Mustapha Fasinro was rewarded for his great play by scoring a low shot to tie the match 7-7 heading to the sixth and last chukka.

Marcelo Pasqual and Laplacette both failed to convert their penalties from 60 and 40 yard respectively but Damien Duncan puts away his effort under pressure from Santiago Cernadas. Marcelo then scored back-to-back to give Linetrale a 10-7 lead before Cernadas scored to make the scoreline look respectable.

The day’s first match saw HST beat Bell Oil & Gas 5-3 to win the Lagos Governor’s Cup.

Sunday’s matches will see Lagos Caverton and Kano HST battle in the final of the Lagos Low Cup while the Majekodunmi Cup will round off the polo fiesta which has MTN and GTBank as its major sponsors.

Governor, Independence Cups at stake

.. as Lagos Shorelines qualify for Majekodunmi Cup final

Ironclad shorelines booked a place in Sunday’s final of the Majekodunmi Cup following a 7-5 win over Kano Ashbert Titans as the 2013 Lagos Polo International tournament reaches its penultimate day of action today with three titles at stake.

Argentines Eduardo Menedes and Julio Novillo-Estrada spearheaded a great fifth and sixth chukkas to land the three points at stake. They now have an unassailable six points from their games having claimed the scalp of Delaney Linetrale in their first match.

Today’s proceedings will get underway with Ibadan Challenge confronting Kano Susplan in the Low Cup with nothing but pride at stake as the places for tomorrow’s final have been occupied by Lagos Caverton and Kano RTC.

But their would be so much to play for in all the other matches of the day as winning teams will not only be reveling in the joy of victory but savour titles.

Lagos HST and Lagos Bell Oil & Gas will compete for the Lagos Governor’s Cup in a match which falls under the Low Cup. Also, Linetrale Delaney will battle Lintex Anadariya for the Independence Cup while Kano Titans Ashbert will tango with Fifth Chukker for the Italian Ambassador’s Cup.

In an exciting match played on Friday, Caverton edged Goodfellows 5.5 -5 while RTC saved their best for the last by rallying to beat Ibadan Challenge 9-6 in one of Friday’s matches.

Goodfellows could not believe their luck as they conceded a goal in the dying moments which dealt a big blow to their title dream. The team lost the final of the Dansa Cup to Tavia Trojan but got a sweet revenge when they beat the same team in the qualifier.

Ibadan Challenge were also undone by a fourth and final chukka rally by HST who began their campaign with a win over Ibadan Jericho.

Challenge led the first two chukkas with scores at 3-2 and 5-3 but they were pegged back at 6-6 heading to the last chukka.

Mustapha Sheriff’s goal was sandwiched by Murtala Aliyu’s goals to clinch the tie for the north-based team.

Shoreline silence Linetrale Delaney

... as Goodfellows whitewash HST

Kola Kareem puts up a virtuoso display to help Ironclad Shoreline record a 11 – 8 upset win over defending champions Linetrale Delaney in the Majekodunnmi Cup as the Lagos Polo International Tournament heads to its homestretch

Marcelo Pasqual scored in the ding minutes of the fifth chukka to hand Delaney a 8-7 lead but a late rally by the Shoreline was complete by two quick goals by Kareem in the sixth and final chukka. The atmosphere that greeted the result was similar to the one on Wednesday when Anadariya beat Fifth Chukker, last year's finalists in the same cup.

Earlier, Lagos Goodfellows continued their match for glory by beating HST 10^½– 3 in the Low Cup as Former Lagos State Commissioner for Finance Wale Edun played a circuit breaker role for the Goodfellows by curtailing the moves of the HST parading the Mdehli brothers Mohammed and Kareem.

Thomas Usher scored two 40-yards penalty to give Goodfellows a 2-^½ lead but Ali Bajarwhi’s 60 yard shot rolled in slowly to the goal to give HST a slender a^½- goal lead. Usher scored another penalty from 30 yards just before the as the lively opening chukka came to an end.

Wale Edu’s son Tobi then put his name on the scorers’ sheet by scrambling in a shot soon after, it was Usher again who scored a high goal shot from 30 yards to give the Goodfellows a 5- 2^½lead.

Usher also scored another goal in the early part of the third chukka before Tobi finished off a solo move by tapping in for 7- 2^½- lead.

Abdulmimuni Musa also scored in succession in the third chukka before Usher scored his side’s tenth goal with tobi riding off Kareem Mdehli.

In the day’s first match, Kano H-Hago edged Ibadan Jericho 8-7 to notch their second straight win. Their low-margin win could however count against them for a place in Sunday’s final following Kano RTC’s 8-3^½- win over Jericho. The defeat ended Jericho’s slim hope of progressing to the final

Another entertaining match yesterday saw Caverton whitewash Bell Oil & Gas 11^½-3 in the League 1 of the Low Cup.

Caverton, who are billed to confront Goodfellows in a vital match today seem to be unmerited of their 1.5 handicap advantage as they outscored their opponents in all the four chukkas.

Other matches slated for today will see Ibadan Challenge battle RTC while in the Majekodunmi Cup, Ironclad Shoreline will slug it out with Kano Titans-Ahbert.

Empire Polo Club’s Youth Polo Program Puts On Demonstration

was the party of the year, at least for Sofia Bonillo and all her guests. She turned six years old and wanted to have a polo party to introduce her friends and their parents to polo. Sofia is a youth player at the newly established Empire Polo Club’s Youth Program under the direction of Connie Atkinson and Roxy Keyfauver. All the stops were pulled out to make this a special day for Sofia. Empire’s children players put on demonstration game consisting of two teams of four players, even though the game was held in the arena.

Every one of these children with the exception of a couple have only been riding for a few months. It was a hot and furious game as the players trotted, while others picked up speed and cantered down the arena, fighting for the ball and scoring. All these children have come a long way in their riding and playing skills in such a short time and showed it much to the delight of those in attendance.

After the game, the players lead their horses back into the arena to give those who wanted to try polo an opportunity to ride a polo horse and get instructions on how to hit the ball from the children themselves. The players placed their helmets on the individual guests and lead them around explaining the preliminaries of hitting the ball and riding a polo horse. The guests enjoyed themselves immensely, and for many, it was the first time ever being on a horse. The children instructors were also fantastic, taking great pride in their student’s achievements. What a great party day.! One that will be remembered by all for a long time to come. Thank you Empire Polo Club.

Col Paul Belcher retires as Chairman of Guards Polo Club after 10 seasons

The focus of the last weekend of the 2011 season was not only some great polo on several grounds at the Club, but the various farewells for our retiring Chairman, Col Paul Belcher. He has been Chairman of the Club for 10 years and his successor, Jock Green Armytage, paid tribute to him and his wife Sanda at the Chairman's Tournament Dinner. The Chairman has been at the helm during many significant events at the Club, not least the 50th anniversary celebrations, the 50th anniversary of The Queen's Cup and the opening of the new Clubhouse in 2009. After Sunday's games, Board Member Susan Bailey and the Non Playing Membership at the Club made a presentation to the Chairman in recognition of his many years as their representative on the Board. However, the Chairman and his wife have been presented with Life Membership of Guards Polo Club and so we look forward to welcoming them back to the Club next season. FRANCE - POLO DE DEAUVILLE AND BLACK STORM won and remained unbeaten on the fifth day of the French

Many of these players have worn this season in this Europe, which enters its final stretch of this successful and traditional event.

Ellerstina and Estancia Grande record wins in Sunday’s Argentine Open action

Ellerstina scored an opening win over Alegria Sunday afternoon in the opening round of play in the 118^thArgentine Open played on the fields at Palermo in
Buenos Aires. The 20-17 victory held little in common with arch-rival La Dolfina’s 23-10 walk over Chapa Uno yesterday, but a win is a win, and Ellerstina certainly showed its ability to score goals in the match.

Ellerstina took an early 2-1 lead after the first chukker with goals from Facundo Pieres and Nico Pieres. Francisco Bensadon kept Alegria from being shut out with a single goal.

Ellerstina and Alegria scored two goals apiece in the second period. Bensadon added two more for Alegria while Facundo Pieres accounted for both of Ellerstina’s goals. Although seemingly in control, Ellerstina held on to a narrow one goal 4-3 lead after two.

Ellerstina notched three goals in the third, two more from Facundo and one from Gonzalito Pieres. Ellerstina opened up a two goal spread, 7-5, holding Alegria to just two goals from Francisco de Narvaez.

Alegria pumped up its efforts in the fourth, outscoring Ellerstina 3-2 and trailing by
a single goal, 9-8, at the end of the first half of play. Alegria got one from Bensadon and a pair from de Narvaez. Ellerstina got single goals from Nachi Heguy and Nico Pieres.

Two goals from Ellerstina’s Gonzalito Pieres in the fifth were offset by a single goal
from de Narvaez. After five chukkers of play, Ellerstina led by a just two goals, 11-9.

Ellerstina exploded for three goals in the sixth, getting two from Facundo Piers and one from Nico Pieres. Alegria struggled to stay close, tallying goals from Freddie Mannix, Mariano Aguerre and de Narvaez and trailing by two goals, 14-12.

The teams combined for six more goals in the seventh. Ellerstina picked up single goals from Facundo, Nico and Gonzalito Pieres. Alegria countered with goals
from Mannix, Aguerre and de Narvaez, again. Alegria still trailed by two goals, 17-15, with seven minutes left to play.

Ellerstina outscored Alegria 3-2 in the final period of play with Facundo Pieres scoring all three. Mannix responded with a pair of goals, but the 2010 Argentine Open defending champion held on for the 20-17 win.

Facundo Pieres led all scoring with 11 goals. Nico Pieres and Gonzalito Pieres scored four goals apiece with Nachi Heguy adding a goal for the win.

De Narvaez set the pace for Alegria with seven goals. Mannix and Bensadon scored four goals each while Aguerre added two goals.

ESTANCIA GRANDE 18, CHAPA II 13

Estancia Grande closed out the day’s Argentine Open play with an 18-13 win over Indios Chapaleufu II.

Estancia Grande charged out to an early4-1 lead with Agustin Merlos and Lolo Castagnola scoring two goals apiece. Eduardo Heguy converted a penalty goal for Chapa II.

Agustin Merlos scored two more goals for Estancia Grande in the second but Chapa II
responded with three goals, cutting the Estancia Grande lead to two goals, 6-4.

A penalty goal from Agustin Merlos and a goal from the field from Lucas Monteverde were answered by two penalty conversions from Heguy. At the end of three chukkers Estancia Grande maintained a two goal lead, 8-6.

Agustin Merlos scored on a penalty shot and Castagnola added a goal from the
field. Heguy scored his team’s only goal of the chukker as Estancia Grande rode off the field at the end of the first half with a 10-7 lead.

Defenses tightened in the fifth, with Chapa II shutting down the Estancia Grande offense for the first time all day. The Chapa II attack didn’t do much better, managing a single goal from Alejandro Novillo Astrada and a penalty goal from Alberto Heguy. Chapa II still trailed, but it was just a single goal behind, 10-9.

Monteverde scored a pair of goals in the sixth and Sebastian Merlos added a goal. Astrada scored from the field for Chapa II and Eduardo Heguy converted a penalty shot for a goal. Estancia Grande led 13-11. Sebastian Merlos received his fourth yellow card in the game, however, and would not be allowed to play in Estancia
Grande’s next outing.

Agustin Merlos added two more goals to the Estancia Grande total with Julio Arellano scouring the only goal of the seventh chukker for Chapa II. Estancia Grande took a three goal, 15-12 lead into the final period.

Alberto Heguy managed a single goal in the eighth, but two goals from Castagnola and a goal from Monteverde shut the door on Chapa II as Estancia Grande celebrated the 18-13 win.

Play will continue in the opening rounds of play in the Argentine Open on Saturday,
November 26 with La Aguada (1-0) meeting Chapa Uno (0-1) at 2pm followed by a
faceoff between La Dolfina (1-0) and Pilara Piaget (0-1) at 4pm. On Sunday, November 27, Estancia Grande (1-0) will meet Alegria (0-1) at 2pm followed by a showdown between La Dolfina (1-0) and Chapa II (0-1).

SANTA BARBARA, CA - SANTA BARBARA POLO CLUB - Lucchese Takes Second Straight Open Title

The Cinderella Piaget polo team that fought its way into the finals of the 2011 Bombardier Pacific Coast Open at the Santa Barbara Polo Club this afternoon had little to apologize for in its 11-9 loss.Astrada scored on another 60-yard penalty shot in the second as Piaget went up 4-1, but that would be the extent of their offense for the rest of the period. Two goals from 10-goaler Adolfo Cambiaso (one from the field and one on a penalty shot) were followed by a pair of goals from Blake, and Lucchese left the field on top of a 5-4 score. “The second chukker killed them,” said polo veteran Steve Crowder. “After jumping out to a three goal lead, and have them come back with four straight goals, it was just awful,” he added.
