USPA Silver Cup Final
Work To Ride/Los Machitos wins title in Greenwich
July 19, 2017
Over two weeks of intense play, four teams battled for
the distinguished title.
Work to Ride/Los Machitos quickly advanced to the final
after defeating each of their three opponents. Despite an early loss to Work to
Ride/Los Machitos, Phoenix overcame opponents Hublot and Postage Stamp Farm to
earn their final spot on July 16.
At the onset of the 2017 Silver Cup Final, Phoenix
received two goals on handicap.
The game opened with a goal from Work to Ride/Los
Machitos’ Joseph Manheim.
This initial goal, combined with strong defensive plays
left Phoenix scoreless at the
end of the first period. The second chukker mirrored the
first, as Mariano Aguerre sunk a goal through the posts for Work to Ride/Los
Machitos. Matias Magrini countered, garnering Phoenix’s first goal of the
contest.
The remainder of
the first half continued at a steady pace as Aguerre scored his second goal to
even the score 3-3 at the half. Aguerre remained strong when play resumed in
the fourth as he fired in another goal from the field. Once again, a determined
Phoenix answered with a goal -this time from Victorino Ruiz Jorba. A Penalty 3
conversion from Work to Ride/Los Machitos’ Mariano Gonzalez closed out the
chukker 5-4 in favor of Work to Ride/Los Machitos. Play picked up in the fifth
as the teams added two field goals apiece to the scoreboard to maintain the gap
7-6.
With one chukker
remaining in regulation time, and trailing by one, Phoenix was within reach. A
field goal by Phoenix’s Toro Ruiz tied the score 7-7. With the possibility of
overtime looming, Mariano Aguerre, a newly-minted Polo Hall of Famer, made his
sixth goal of the day securing a narrow win 8-7, continuing the tradition
adding his name to a long list of famed polo players.

Royal Salute Coronation Cup Day Guards Polo Club Saturday 29 July
The Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) is delighted to announce that Swarovski, the renowned crystal company, will sponsor the England Ladies team in their inaugural match on Royal Salute Coronation Cup Day as part of a season-long sponsorship. For the first time, the England Ladies Polo Team, captained by Nina Vestey, will play a visiting USA Ladies team for the Thai Polo Club Ladies International for the Diamond Jubilee Trophy on Saturday 29 July at Guards Polo Club. The addition of a ladies’ test match on this world-renowned international day of sport is testament to the increasing popularity of polo among lady players.
David Woodd, Chief Executive of the HPA said: “The appointment of Swarovski as the official sponsor of the England Ladies Polo Team emphasises the increasing number of talented and competitive lady players in our sport. This area of polo is growing rapidly and the support of an influential and dynamic brand such as Swarovski can only enhance the ladies’ game further. This inaugural test match, for the Thai Polo Club Ladies International for the Diamond Jubilee Trophy, will also highlight the ladies’ game to a wider, international audience and encourage others to take up this great sport.”

5th Luxembourg Polo International
CapitalatWork won the 5th Luxembourg Polo International
tournament, organized by the Polo Club Luxembourg on the weekend of July 7 to
July 9, 2017 in Luxembourg-Merl.
Six polo teams competed last weekend on the polo fields
of the Polo Club Luxembourg in 9 polo matches over three days.
CapitalatWork won the final match against BMW with 8 : 4
goals to become the winner of the 5th
Luxembourg Polo International Cup. The players of
CaptialatWork were overjoyed: Team Captain Colm Smith (Ireland, handicap -2),
Svetlana Silvane (Latvia, handicap -2) who shared a position with Jonathan Feldbrugge
(Belgium, handicap -2) (all three members of the Polo Club Luxembourg), Regis
Racine (France, handicap +1) and the Argentine professional Segundo Copello
with handicap + 3.
BMW, who participated for the first time in Luxembourg’s
annual international polo tournament, won its first two games on Friday and
Saturday and became second of the tournament. dinh van, presented by the jewellery
KASS-Jentgen, won the demi-final match on Sunday. Sotheby’s International
Realty become fourth.
The two teams Excellence Hotels, a group of luxury
hotels in Clervaux, and Standard Aggregated, a Luxembourgish securitization company,
participated also the first time with their teams in the 2nd
Luxembourg Junior Polo International Cup. Excellence
Hotels with their players Leopold Ludorf, Ben Dew and Luca Knaff won over
Standard Aggregated with Holly Wagner, Paule Biren and Aurélie Molitor (replaced
by Joey Brandenburger on Saturday and Sunday).
The tournament was spoiled with great weather which
allowed approximately 2,500 visitors over the three days to fully enjoy
watching the polo matches and all entertainment around polo. On Friday the “Automotion Fleet
Garden Party” dragged appr. 500 visitors to the polo fields also to test drive
over 35 presented luxury cars. On Saturday the star tenor singer Thomas
Kiessling gave a concert before one of Luxembourg’s most famous DJs “Shanu”
created the right atmosphere for the “White Polo Party” in the evening. On
Sunday car lovers were impressed by the “Classic Car Show” sponsored by BMW.
Best of show was a white Jaguar E Type 2 + 2 with a 4.2 engine of Mr. and Mrs.
Hentgen, who won a VIP invitation to the ZOUTE Grand Prix, kindly sponsored by
BMW.
Georg Diehl consistently commented all matches. The
Hungarian Gábor Szegedi, a +1 goal professional owner and manager of La Ballena
Polo Club, proved his professionalism by umpiring all 9 polo matches. In addition
a number of volunteers made the event possible, including Hamza Haloui and
other refugees that the Luxembourgish Red Cross kindly referred to the Polo
Club.
The President of the Polo Club Luxembourg and event
organizer Alexander Ludorf summarized his
impressions of the three-day tournament: ”All players
gave their best on the polo field and I was impressed by the thrilling but
always fair play. Luxembourg’s Polo Club organized an event that is unique in our country. We were
honoured by the presence of the Argentine and the Belgian Ambassador. The German Ambassador in Luxembourg, Dr. Heinrich
Kreft, assisted together with Rob Thillen, Luxembourg's sports commissioner of
the Ministry of Sport, the award ceremony.
Their presence and the high number of participants
showed that our unique event and the Polo sport in general has become an
integral part of Luxembourg’s equestrian sports landscape.”

HPA names the England team to play The Commonwealth in the Royal Salute Coronation Cup 2017

Guards Polo 04/05/2017
The Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) has named the 25-goal team that will represent England – sponsored by Flannels.com – in their annual International match for the Royal Salute Coronation Cup at Guards Polo Club on Saturday 29 July. England’s opponents
will be an almost unchanged, 26-goal, GT Bank-sponsored
Commonwealth team, winners of this prestigious trophy in 2016. In that
memorable match, the Commonwealth team beat the home side 12-11 in a
fast-paced and thrilling game.
James Beim,
who is currently having a superb high-goal season with El Remanso, will
captain England for the third time and his 10th as a member of the
England team on this day. Max Charlton, the UK’s highest handicapped player, currently rated at seven goals, retains his England shirt along with James Harper,
who made his debut in this event last year and has been impressing
everyone in the high-goal, playing alongside James Beim in the El
Remanso team. The fourth member of the England squad for the Royal
Salute Coronation Cup match sees the return of the former England
captain Luke Tomlinson, currently
playing at back with La Indiana, the Queen’s Cup finalists. Tomlinson’s
experience of the big occasion – he is the most successful England polo
captain ever – will be an added advantage to the home side.
David
Woodd, Chief Executive of the HPA said: “Both teams produced a
brilliant performance last year with England only beaten by a well
prepared and equally tough team in the final minutes of the sixth
chukka. Three of our players are having a very good season in the
22-goal which is always a help and all our players should be well
mounted so, although we are a goal less and playing open, we are well
placed to win this coveted trophy back from the Commonwealth.”
The GT Bank-sponsored Commonwealth team will again be captained by the Canadian International Fred Mannix Jnr. He will be joined by Pakistan professional Hissam Ali Hyder, a Board Director at Guards Polo Club, and John Paul Clarkin,
the New Zealand Captain, both of whom played last year. The only change
to Commonwealth team line-up from last year is that Australian
five-goaler Dirk Gould has replaced South African Chris Mackenzie who is unable to play.
With the Swarovski England Ladies also in
action against the USA Ladies, playing for the Diamond Jubilee Trophy
in the Thai Polo Club Ladies International, the Royal Salute Coronation
Cup Day offers two premier sporting events. Complementing these games
is a variety of hospitality and ticket options to ensure a perfect
day for players and spectators in the spectacular surroundings of
Windsor Great Park.
To
purchase tickets for the Royal Salute Coronation Cup – there will be no
charge for cars, but everyone will require a General Admission or Stand
Ticket – go to www.coronationcuppolo.com/ tickets/ Substantial
discounts are available for all members of the HPA. To find out more

Shalimar shine in Hildon Archie David Cup Final
Some great
teamwork from Shalimar resulted in them winning the Hildon Archie David Cup at
Guards Polo Club, defeating Snake Bite 8-5 in a thrilling final. Patron Kassem
Shafi received the UK’s leading 8-goal championship trophy from Hildon’s James Burston
and Samantha Greatbanks.
Played as a
tribute to Hildon founder Christian Heppe, a life playing member of Guards Polo
Club who died last year, this sponsorship is the next chapter of Hildon’s
long-standing relationship with Guards Polo Club. Hildon also requested that
finals day was a fundraiser for the Nicolls Spinal Injury Foundation (nsif). An
auction over lunch raised some £7,000, while the day’s raffle was still being
totted up at the time of writing.
Vieri Antinori showed
Shalimar’s intent from the first minute, firing through a goal in less than 60
seconds. Team-mate Milly Hine, who was later named The Polo Magazine Most
Valuable Player, repeated this feat in the second minute, giving Shalimar a
lead which they never relinquished.
Maximillian
Kirchhoff’s Snake Bite were equally competitive – resulting in some fast,
flowing polo on The Queen’s Ground, but they failed to convert some good runs
to goals. Meanwhile, Milly Hine, who is just 16, was playing well above her
handicap and had no qualms in riding off some higher-handicapped opposition.
Nick Pepper kept
Snake Bite in contention, well supported by David Ashby, but Shalimar’s 6-3
lead going into the fourth and final chukka was a tough one to overcome. Ashby
started this chukka with a penalty and Pepper, who later received the Hildon
Best Playing Pony prize for the 10-year-old Patsy, shot through a field goal,
but it was not enough. Milly Hine produced another successful race to goal –
despite Thomas Coid’s best efforts to stop her. Nico Roberts, who last week had
been a member of the winning Royal Windsor Cup team, confirmed Shalimar’s
dominance by firing through a 60-yard penalty – the final goal of the match –
with only two minutes remaining on the clock.
The sub final, for
the Caterham Cup, was equally competitive. Not surprising as 26 teams had entered
this year’s Hildon Archie David Cup competition, ensuring that all those
entered had to be at their peak for every game. This Caterham Cup match saw a
7-5 win for Mindi Byrne’s Tex8n Polo. The Chairman of the Hurlingham Polo
Association, Stephen Hutchinson’s Tayto team started strongly, but some great
team-work from D’Artagnan Giercke, Nico San Roman and Nicolas Fontanarrosa put
Tex8n ahead by half time. Tayto fought
back strongly in the second half, but Tex8n Polo kept their cool to win
through.
A hallmark of the
Archie David competition is that the Guards teams that are knocked out after
the league stages can play for the Claude Pert Cup. This year’s cup final featured
Mo Sheikh’s BHC Polo and Stefan Sund’s Previse Polo Team. Sund’s boys came out
best in this match, winning the Claude Pert 9-7.
